Design in the Age of AI: Opportunities and Risks

Hello everyone, I’m new to this platform and I’d really appreciate your perspective.

I’m currently planning to pursue a career in design, but I’ve been feeling increasingly uncertain due to the rapid development of AI technologies. It’s honestly a bit overwhelming.

Today, it seems like almost anyone can generate a functional website prototype within an hour using AI tools. This makes me wonder: does it still make sense to invest time in learning design as a craft?

It feels like the average level of professional training hasn’t fully adapted yet to this new reality, where AI is already deeply integrated and evolving very quickly.

I would love to hear from professionals in design and AI:

  • How do you see the future of design as a profession?

  • What skills will remain valuable?

  • And what development paths would you recommend for someone entering the field today?

Thank you in advance for your insights.

What type of “design” are you referring to?

Design should ultimately bring innovation and creativity. If AI can support that process, there’s nothing wrong with using it. What truly matters is that the final outcome reflects originality and new ideas. Using better tools to achieve that is completely acceptable.

Of course, AI tools are still evolving and may not yet be fully refined, but given the current pace of development, they are likely to improve significantly in the near future.

The future of design is shifting from manual execution to strategic curation, where your value lies in framing the right problems rather than just drafting the pixels. While AI handles the functional prototypes, human designers remain essential for high-level empathy, ethical oversight, and aligning creative outputs with complex business goals. I recommend focusing your development on product strategy and AI orchestration, as mastering the “why” behind a design will always outweigh the automated “how.”

I’m currently applying for a general media design program, which includes areas such as UI/UX design, graphic design, and product design.

Over the past six months, I’ve been learning Figma and created a full app design and prototype from scratch. Yesterday, I tried using a new AI tool called Claude, and within about five minutes I generated a functional prototype that didn’t feel inferior to my own work.

That experience honestly made me a bit uneasy, because a skill I had been carefully developing for months suddenly seemed easily reproducible by AI.

By the way, thank you very much for your interest in my publication and participation in the discussion.

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and accurate response. I truly can’t disagree with your points — your perspective has really made me reflect and rethink a few things.
