I am taking this course on Coursera and I am unable to complete DLS Course 1, week 2 labs “Practice Programming Assignment: Python Basics with Numpy” and “Programming Assignment: Logistic Regression with a Neural Network Mindset”. It gives an error message, “A connection to the notebook server could not be established. The notebook will continue trying to reconnect. Check your network connection or notebook server configuration.”
I just tested it, and I was able load those labs without problem. I’m in the USA west coast region.
Perhaps Coursera is having a problem in your region. Or maybe there is an issue with your internet service.
Or, perhaps you have not paid the course fee?
All other labs of weeks 3 and 4 are working perfectly fine. And I have also paid the fee.
Thanks for the additional information. The only theory I can construct based on that evidence is that either 1) there was something different about your environment between the two cases or 2) this was just some sort of anomaly caused by a temporary malfunction on the server side.
If you used the same computer and network for both the week 2 and week 3&4 assignments, then that just leaves the “bad weather in the cloud” theory.
One easy thing to try is the old “log out and log in again” trick. Log out of Coursera and back in again. Maybe start a new copy of your browser and then try the Week 2 assignments again.
Thank you for your response. I tried the suggested methods, including logging out and back in, and even using incognito mode, but unfortunately, the problem still persists.
Did you retry the Week 3 and Week 4 assignments to make sure they still work?
If so, then I’m out of ideas basically. But the only remaining theory is that this is some kind of IT problem on your side. If you are accessing the course from a work or school network, the one other thing that might be worth trying is using a different WiFi network. E.g. try a public wifi at a coffee shop or public library if there is such near you.
Maybe the other thing to try would be using a VPN if you have one available. No guarantees, of course, but I don’t know what else to suggest.
Yes, I retried the labs, and all of them are working except the Week 2 ones. However, using a VPN seems to have fixed the issue. Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.

Interesting. That must mean that there was some firewall or proxy server on your normal network that was blocking some URLs that somehow only happened in the Week 2 assignments.
It is great news that you are now able to access the Week 2 assignments. Given what happened, it’s probably a good idea just to use the VPN by default for doing all the course assignments going forward.
