Hello from An Older Student

I’m a new student but actually in the latter stages of my career. I’ve always wanted to learn more about AI and its uses, but in my career when we had the opportunity to use it, it still very much in the research stages. In my middle to later stages in my career, we didn’t see the need for it. But now that I’m closer to finishing up, I can see how we could have used at my previous company. In my current company, we are using it, but my group is more or less support. As I embark towards retirement, I’d like to see how I might be able to use it for some personal projects. Looking forward to learning more.

Welcome to the DLAI forums from another older student. I spent my entire career working as a software engineer and engineering manager, but never in anything related to ML/AI. Then I discovered the courses here when I was still a few years out from retirement and was hooked by the great material Prof Ng presents. Have a look at the list of courses and you’ll likely find some that catch your interest.

There are a number of different paths you could take, depending on your background and interests. If you’re a software developer and want to learn how to build your own solutions using ML/DL/AI or want to understand the principles and internals of how ML systems work, then consider starting with the Machine Learning Specialization, followed by the Deep Learning Specialization.

If you’re more interested in how to apply existing ML systems to your personal areas of interest, as opposed to building new solutions, you could start with AI For Everyone and then have a look at the menu of Short Courses that introduce LLMs.

Of course you can also participate in discussions here on the forums, either about course material or about other ML topics, and see where that takes you.

Regards,
Paul

Can you talk a little bit about the use case at your previous company?

Where I spent the majority of my career with a major Hollywood entertainment company. I wasn’t part of the group that started investigating the use of AI, but I could see where it might have been helpful. My area was in the design and control of theme park rides. I’m now finishing up my career working for one of the major car manufacturers where my division is using AI for ADAS systems, but again, my part is in support of the AI systems, not the AI systems themselves.

AI theme park could be very interesting. Every person that takes a ride, you have video of their experience and you could do sentiment analysis to see how much fun they had. Maybe you use some reinforcement learning to tune parameters of the ride over many iterations. If inference for generative AI becomes cheap and fast enough, it might be possible to make immersive VR/XR experiences that are personalized for everyone.
