How to read the text in point 2 below?

I have started working on the Jupyter notebook of Course 1, Week 2 optional Python Numpy assignment. I am unable to understand the text as in the second point of the above screenshot as:
$$\begin{align*} & L_1(\hat{y}, y) = \sum_{i=0}^{m-1}|y^{(i)} - \hat{y}^{(i)}| \end{align*}\tag{6}$$.
In some of the instructions in the notebook, I am expected to understand such kind of text.
How do I understand such text full of special characters ? What is the exact purpose of such text ?
Please help.

Thank You.

is a mathjax formatting error. it is always a good idea to learn how to read latex.

It should be formatted as:

\begin{align*} & L_1(\hat{y}, y) = \sum_{i=0}^{m-1}|y^{(i)} - \hat{y}^{(i)}| \end{align*}

Ok, Thank You Sir, I think it was a temporary problem while working on the assignment in Coursera workspace. I am able to see the formula above when downloading and opening this notebook on my local jupyter. Thanks for your help.
