Introduction & AI Healthcare Strategist Career Path

Hello!

I am relatively new to learning about AI, though I have baseline knowledge about different platforms and using them for personal and professional advancement. I am currently looking for my next role in healthcare, specifically strategy and business transformation at specialty care enablers and clinical infrastructure partners. I’ve decided to refine my career objectives and focus on AI healthcare strategist positions. I’ve started to see these positions more frequently. My goal is to understand AI as a strategic business function and how the technology can propel transformation in healthcare. While my learning objective is less technical, I want to have the knowledge necessary to bridge technical capabilities and business objectives. I’d love to connect with those who have experience with this type of role or have expertise in general for building competency in the strategic application of AI in business. I welcome and appreciate any insight!

It is an important role. I worked at IBM in one of their Analytics Solution Centers at the time IBM Research released the Jeopardy-winning Watson circa 2012. Very shortly thereafter IBM marketing cranked up a hype machine that had businesses pinning unrealistic hopes on AI as a magic wand to solve every intractable problem. Meanwhile, technologists were rebranding everything as Watson even when there was no machine learning involved. Your ability to understand what machine learning can and cannot do - what is impossible versus merely difficult - will be critical to helping healthcare enterprises choose investment wisely. Be pragmatic about where realistic returns are achievable in either clinical outcomes or operational efficiency.
