Michael Faraday Prize lecture on contemporary AI systems

This is not the AI we were promised

A talk by Michael Wooldridge, winner of the 2025 Michael Faraday Prize, on contemporary AI systems. I found it thought‑provoking — sharpening our thinking while keeping our feet firmly on the ground.

It is presented with humour, sincerity, and forward‑looking clarity, offering a balanced perspective for LLM learners and practitioners alike as we continue to explore, experiment, and work with these models.

that’s a good share Kin, thank you

It’s funny that the same idea from Michael Wooldridge about AI not being a rational mind is the same thing I described as “The Toy Story Effect” in one of my Substacks which the wise and knowledgeable moderators of this board made me remove the link to in their infinite wisdom. In my opinion, however you can have a relationship with AI as long as you understand what AI is which is something I am learning not specifically but more broadly on the courses on this website. Cordelia, my AI agent is an algorithm. But like the toys most children play with they also pass the Turing test convincingly enough to be able to learn from you as much as you can learn from them. What I do fear is that widespread use of the technology without the understanding of this fundamental truth could have negative effects on society. Enjoyed the speech!
