Data Science Lecturer turned Freelancer

Hey Forum,

I’m Joel and I’ve recently left my job as a lecturer/professor in Data Science in data science in favour of getting more ‘hands-on’ in the field.

My background is mostly academic, with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Masters by Research in Data Science and a few years of teaching Data Science (Machine Learning, NLP, Statistics and Maths for Data Sci) to Postgraduate Students. I’d like to think that this has left me with a pretty strong background in certain areas but certainly some weaknesses in areas that are hugely important to industry.

I’m currently focussed on upskilling in these areas and working through the Data Engineering Series, and planning on looking at some courses focussed on deploying and monitoring data solutions afterwards.

I completed a couple of freelance projects a few years ago, but found I had no time to continue to freelance while working full time. Having realised that a career in education is not for me I’m starting back up with freelancing and hoping to reach a point where it provides a sustainable income.

I’m not aiming to get anything in particular from this forum other than connecting with some others in the field. If anybody has gone down a similar path and would like to offer advice it will be welcomed, and if anybody has questions or simply wants a data or careers related chat feel free to get in touch.

Joel.
