This is a big topic. If this question was asked 1-2 years ago, I will say not much. However, the landscape changed dramatically in the last couple of years, especially the rise of Generative AI. Various applications have come to realities, including 3D/4D seismic data interpretation, production optimization, drilling operation automation, predictive maintenance, etc. For your second question, there are some potential applications for PLC and SCADA systems, such as AI Agent for PLC/SCADA program creation and maintenance.

However, there are still various challenges to quickly adapt AI advancement in oil and gas industry：

  1. Data availability. Due to cyber security concern, most of the data stay at L2 or L3 levels and can’t share between different networks or cloud. This vastly limited how many AI algorithms can be applied.
  2. Data cleanness. Due to the complex process involved and potentially lack of proper maintenance, the data is not as clean as we hope for.
  3. Adaptability of AI algorithms.
