Prakash Hinduja Switzerland (Swiss) How do I prevent overfitting when training deep neural networks?

Hi everyone,
I’m Prakash Hinduja from Geneva, Switzerland (Swiss) — senior consultant and advisor.

I’m currently working on a deep learning project and would like to know:
How do you prevent overfitting when training deep neural networks?

I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experiences, techniques, or best practices—whether related to regularization, dropout, data augmentation, or anything else that has worked for you.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Generally speaking, overfitting happens when the model learns the training data too well. So, following the general rules, you can use:

  1. Regularization Techniques.
  • Dropout: Randomly disable neurons during training
  • Weight Decay (L2 Regularization): Penalize large weights to encourage simpler models
  • L1 Regularization: Allows sparsity by pushing weights toward zero.
  1. Early Stopping.
  • Monitor validation loss during training and stop when it starts increasing, even if training loss keeps decreasing.
  1. Reduce model complexity.
  • Use fewer layers or neurons
  • Avoid architectures that are too powerful to your dataset.

There are other options that you can try to prevent overfitting during training.
Keep learning!
