Understanding the slicing bit for the 2d contour plot for cost function visualization

So I am currently watching the ‘Visualizing the cost function‘ video in the week 1 module. I get the part of horizontally slicing points with the same height from the 3d graph and those being represented in the 2d graph. But shouldn’t the 2d contour plot have slices like the ones shown below in the first picture where the ellipse is not fully connected ? (obviously that’s just one slice). Also, the second picture shows how the slicing could happen.

To understand my point a bit better, if we were to slice the points according to the picture below, that’s how we get the image in the first picture.
