in the question: “To reduce high variance, the regularization hyperparameter lambda must be increased. True/false?”
Since there are other ways to reduce high variance, one doesn’t must reduce lambda. however, the only accepted answer is True.
can you share the screenshot of the question you are asking
Also the question asked about increase not reduce

Hello Benaya,
High variance means overfitting, in that case increasing the lambda will help to reduce the overfitting without effecting any important properties or features of data. So answer True is correct.

no argument about that. obviously, increasing lambda should help reduce overfitting. all I said is that there are other different ways to reduce overfitting, so saying that to reduce high variance, lambda must be increased is wrong, since you can, for example, get more data for the training set and reduce high variance successfully without changing lambda at all.
Yes, you’re right, but I think you’re just reading too much into the question. Why is lambda involved at all unless you’re doing L2 regularization? So maybe we can ask that they make the question a bit more specific:
If you have an overfitting problem and are using L2 regularization to address that, then you must increase lambda to reduce high variance.
I think that’s what they really meant by the question, as is clear from the way the grader responds to your “False” answer.
There is no penalty for taking the quiz multiple times. It’s just a bit of a nuisance that you can only do 3 tries in each 8 hour period.
If it was obvious, I wouldn’t check “False”. but really, I passed the test regardless, so I don’t complain. I just thought it might help others.
Thanks
Benaya,
The question is more about relativity between variance and lambda, and not asking about other ways to reduce variance.
The question clearly states
- To reduce high variance
- In relation lambda
should be/must be increased?
True or False.
Good that you had this doubt, probably it might help someone having the same doubt!!!

Hi @Benaya_Trabelsi , and as others explained, specially @Deepti_Prasad, the question is giving you boundaries, and you should play the game inside them. In general for all types of test question in any exam. The answers above are more specific.
