Backend Engineer Seeking Guidance on Building a Career in ML

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to join the DeepLearning.AI community.

I have around 6 years of experience as a backend engineer, and I also completed my master’s research in deep neural networks. I’m now planning to strengthen my machine learning and AI skills in a more structured way and move closer toward ML/AI engineering roles.

My current learning plan is:

  1. Start with AI for Everyone
  2. Then complete the Machine Learning Specialization
  3. After that, move to the Deep Learning Specialization

I would really appreciate guidance from the community:

  • Is this the right learning path for someone with my background?
  • What skills should I focus on to transition from backend engineering into ML engineering?
  • What kind of projects should I build to create a strong ML portfolio?
  • Should I focus more on ML fundamentals, deep learning, MLOps, or production AI systems?

I’m especially interested in learning how to combine my backend engineering experience with machine learning so I can work on real-world AI/ML systems.

Thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions. I’m looking forward to learning from everyone here.

Best regards,

Muhammad Nouman

With a Masters in Deep NN’s, those three courses will not teach you very much.

But i want to recall the basics again then i will move ahead.
