Unable to change EC2 instance type from t3.micro to t3.nano in Auto Scaling Group (Week Lab)

Title: Unable to change EC2 instance type from t3.micro to t3.nano in Auto Scaling Group (Week Lab) Tags: Coursera-platform, AWS, Week Lab (Monitoring the Web App / Auto Scaling) Description: Hello, I am currently completing the lab for monitoring and optimizing the web application using EC2, Auto Scaling Groups, and Application Load Balancer. I successfully completed the earlier steps in the lab: - Found the Load Balancer DNS and opened the web application - Installed Apache Benchmark in CloudShell - Ran the stress test with 7000 requests - Monitored CPU and network metrics in the Auto Scaling Group Now I am trying to complete the cost optimization step, where the instructions say to change the instance type from t3.micro to t3.nano using the launch template. However, I am facing a problem: 1. I tried to edit the Auto Scaling Group and update the launch template. 2. AWS shows the error: “You are not authorized to use launch template…” 3. I then terminated the running EC2 instances as instructed. 4. Auto Scaling automatically launches new instances, but the instance type remains t3.micro instead of t3.nano. Because of this, I cannot complete the step where the instance type should change. I believe this might be a permission restriction in the lab environment, but I

@Fathima1 The instruction after 6.1.5 mentions:
Note: If you are not able to use the new template and have received this error

“You are not authorized…”

it could be because you did not choose the right EC2 instance (t3.nano) in step 6.1.4. In this case, please repeat steps 6.1.3-6.1.4 and choose t3.nano. The number should be 3 and the size should be nano.

Did you complete steps 6.1.3-6.1.4? Do you need help with changing the instance type to t3.nano?

I need you help for this lab section

@juliak , I am facing the same issue. PFA the screen shot reference. Instance type is t3.nano

But after i reboot then start at the beginning its solved

No bro , At that time i leave the assignment to do tomorrow same steps but work i don’t know what happened what causes the reason the instructer say after i post its because i am doing wrong steps but i sure i didn’t do anything wrong but that thing fixed but now i am also not complete the assignment yet because another reason cause the cloud shell i tell to the instructer i hope i got the reply soon:relieved_face:

It is not likely the staff will reply until they are back at work after the weekend.

Hello, any update on this? I am still facing this issue.

I performed all the steps again yet same error. Screenshot attached. If I am missing anything, please let me know.

Bro, let me tell you how I cleared the lab :sob:

I tried following the video steps many times, but it didn’t work. Finally, out of frustration, I followed the lab instructions step by step instead of the video.

That’s when I noticed an important extra step that the video didn’t clearly show.

While selecting T3.nano, there is a “Network” option. I carefully read the instructions there and configured it properly—only after that everything started working.

After that, all errors were gone and the lab got cleared.

So when you do it:
:backhand_index_pointing_right: Don’t miss the “Network” option when selecting T3.nano
:backhand_index_pointing_right: Carefully read the instructions at that step—you might have missed something

Don’t rely only on the video, follow the instructions properly.

This is probably where the issue is :+1:

I Thank you Fathima for putting in effort and replying. But I have been following the lab instructions only. I am not relying entirely on video. However, let it retry once again. It seems there is some IAM roles missing as diagnosed by Q. But, I will give it another try.

Same issue. @juliak , can you please check once?

Thank you

If you still see the problem contact to faculty

@rimjhim1 Your role has the permissions required for completing this lab. So this kind of error is totally expected, because this is not what you were asked to do.

@Fathima1 Congrats for clearing this lab!

And thanks for describing your path.
The main point is: “follow the instructions properly.”

The notebooks are updated as the toolset evolves over time.
The videos are static and are never updated, and may contain errors.

That’s why using the notebook instructions is vital to your success.
