That’s a really, really broad and generic question, but I’ll try to summarize it.

Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that uses mainly algebra, statistics and algorithms to extract knowledge and insights from data.

It’s incredibly relevant now (from 2012 approx) because of the breakthrough of Deep Learning, a set of techniques that takes advantage of increasing computational power from modern computers and the vast datasets available in the state of the art to perform an order of magnitude better that classical approaches. This allows to achieve incredible systems, like natural language processing (GPT-3) or image generation models (DALLE-2 and Imagen), which are some of the most popular publications recently.
