The API from Spotify requires premium subscription to do the Lab.
And this is what is being shown on Spotify:

Your application is blocked from accessing the Web API since you do not have a Spotify Premium subscription. Upgrade to Spotify Premium to access the Web API and unlock additional features for your app.

In the lab, you have the option to use the mock API if you face any issues with the Spotify API
