mentorship

My name is Bertrand, currently based in Canada, and I am keen to begin my learning journey on the DeepLearning.AI platform.

My professional background is in energy and climate change consulting. Although I have no prior experience in coding, deep learning, or machine learning, I am highly motivated to learn and effectively utilize the numerous resources available on the platform. My goal is to transition into roles such as AI Trainer, AI Evaluator, Research Analyst, Domain Expert, or Quality Reviewer, where I can combine technical skills with my domain expertise.

Given this, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to have a one-on-one session with a mentor from the forum who could help guide me through an appropriate learning path and provide initial direction as I get started. I just completed the Python for AI course.

I look forward to your guidance and support.

Hey Bertrand, welcome to the community! :raising_hands:

Great to have you here, and congrats on finishing Python for AI – that’s a solid start!

Your background in energy and climate consulting is actually a huge advantage. The AI industry desperately needs people who understand real-world domains, not just the tech. You’re in a better position than you probably realize.

Here’s what I’d suggest for your next steps:

Since you’re eyeing roles like AI Trainer or Evaluator, I’d recommend starting with ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers. It’s short, practical, and directly relevant to what you want to do. After that, Generative AI for Everyone will give you the bigger picture without overwhelming you with code.

Don’t stress about not having a coding background – many of the roles you mentioned (AI Trainer, Domain Expert, Quality Reviewer) actually lean more on critical thinking and domain knowledge than on building models from scratch.

As you go through courses, start thinking about how AI could be applied to climate/energy problems. That cross-pollination between your expertise and AI is where the real value is.

Feel free to drop questions in the Course Q&A section as you go – there’s always someone around to help. You can also tag me if you get stuck.

Good luck with the journey!

Hello, Bertrand! It’s fantastic to meet a professional looking to bridge the gap between climate science and AI. Your background in energy and climate change is a goldmine for the AI industry; we desperately need domain experts to ensure models are scientifically accurate and ethically grounded.

Since you’ve already cleared the first hurdle by completing Python for AI, you have the basic literacy needed to navigate the technical side. Here is a tailored roadmap to help you transition into those specific roles.

Recommended Learning Path

To move into roles like AI Evaluator or Domain Expert, you don’t necessarily need to be a Lead Engineer, but you do need to understand how models ā€œthinkā€ and where they fail.

AI for Everyone

Even though you have some Python, this non-technical course by Andrew Ng is essential for your goal. It focuses on the business and strategic side of AI, which is perfect for a Research Analyst or Domain Expert role.

Machine Learning Specialization

This is the ā€œgold standard.ā€ It will teach you the math and logic behind AI.

  • Why for you: As an AI Evaluator, you need to understand concepts like Bias, Variance, and Overfitting to judge if a model is performing well.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) Specialization

Most AI Trainer and Quality Reviewer roles currently focus on Large Language Models (LLMs).

  • Why for you: Understanding how models process text will allow you to evaluate climate-related reports or research papers generated by AI.

Hello Arman,

Thank you very much for the warm welcome and the encouragement. I’ll follow your guides, as well as use the Course Q&A and reach out if I get stuck.
