Yes, I am facing this problem for programming assignment.Yesterday opened programming assignment but did not completed.
Not sure why yours isn’t working. I was able to complete the assignment myself, though I completed it in one go. @Mubsi kindly support.

On Coursera you could always save your work. Might be a suggestion to send to the team for improvement.
It is likely the staff is discussing this.

From the error in the screenshot you shared above, ...Notebook does not appear to be JSON...., it appears that when you first opened it, you somehow changed/corrupted the JSON structure of the notebook.
Think of this as a piece of code which displays a UI. If something goes wrong with that code, your UI will not get displayed. In this case, the JSON is corrupted, which is why the notebook is not displaying.
Try opening the assignment again. Maybe by now your workspace has reset (which I doubt).
If that would not be the case and you still see this error message: Press Close to close the box, then delete the notebook file from the File Browser on the left.
Next, you use the upload option (in red):
And upload this fresh notebook:

You can then continue working in the uploaded notebook.

I was mistaking about this information.
Your assignment workspace state indeed persists from the last time you open it, so you can continue working in multiple phases. Another indication of this happening is from this learner query, if the workspace was going to reset, the learner would not have seen this error.
In the internal communication that I’m having with you and rest of the mentors, I’ll clear this misguided information from my side, and answer some of the other things we have been talking about.
