Hello everyone,
I’ll get straight to the point - I’m scared about my future in AI because of my past, and honestly, I feel lost. I don’t know what I’m doing with my life, and I need your honest opinions.
I’m currently in my third year at University Politehnica of Bucharest, studying Automatic Control and Computer Science. My GPA is 7.2/10 not great, mostly because I’m not passionate about the signals/control systems curriculum. That said, I perform well in programming related courses, which is where my real interest lies.
I want to become a researcher in AI. I’m serious about learning as much as I can before next year, when I’ll take the entrance exam for a master’s program.
So, based on what I’ve shared, I have two questions:
- Is it still realistic to become a researcher in AI with a relatively low GPA? How much does GPA really matter in the long run?
- What materials (courses, books, or paths) would you recommend to deeply understand AI/ML, especially the math behind the algorithms and techniques?
I’ve come across a few resources like “Algorithms for Optimization”, “Hands-On Machine Learning with Keras”, and “Deep Learning” by Goodfellow. Are these solid choices? What else would you suggest?
