Hey DeepLearning.AI Community,
I have been a part of this community for about a year, after completing a few courses on deep learning, and becoming an Alpha Tester/Mentor for Mathematics for Machine Learning Course. This is a bit of a different post, and I am currently searching for a career as a quant, or data scientist. I was wondering if anyone has any resources they are willing to offer to assist me.
I am completing the last semester of my undergrad career studying Mathematics and Statistics, and have been drawn to the field of data science and quantitative finance. I am eager to continue learning this material and applying it in a professional field.
I understand this may be a bit of a different post, but figured it is a great community to chat with. Any help would be appreciated, thank you all!

I’m currently studying to become a data scientist.
When you say ‘resources’ what are you looking for specifically?
What I learned is that you will need 3 things to become a data scientist:
- Certification for foundational skills
- Practice for Technical and Non-technical interview questions
- Data Science project potfolio
I am taking the math now in prep for certification.
For certification, I’m going to take the Udacity Data Scientist Nanodegree. There are 12 projects that cover the required foundational skills for a data science role.
Stratascratch.com is a good resource to practice technical questions for interviews. All data science roles are required to code in SQL and Python. They also provide non-technical questions, like how to measure mean difference of population through confidence intervals and how many observations are required to achieve statistical power, etc.
For a project portfolio, it’s good to work with a mentor to validate that your ideas are compelling and that the techniques you’re using are executed properly. It appears they have an AI projects section here that provides feedback.
hope this help…
I appreciate that, thank you!
Thank you, this does help quite a bit. I do have a few projects under my belt that I have talked about in interviews. I was also considering the idea of obtaining an online degree in data science or machine learning. What are the benefits of earning a degree through an online school vs one through a university? (Besides being able to work from home and attend online lectures)
“What are the benefits of earning a degree through an online school vs one through a university?”
The benefits are time and money. Most desirable jobs prefer an advanced degree (e.g. Masters in Computer Science or Analytics). If you have the time and money, that is the path of least resistance to meet the requirements to get a data science job.
If you don’t have the time or resources to pay for an advanced degree, you can go to a secondary school that provides technical training for data science. They offer part time or full time programs for 3 - 6 months.
If you are going to take the 2nd option, proceed with caution. I found some of these technical schools are not properly informed to requirements for data science rolls and you can waste a lot of time.
