DLS Course 4: When Saving: "Permission denied: W4A1/Face_Recognition.ipynb"

I’m getting this error “Permission denied: W4A1/Face_Recognition.ipynb” in the header/menubar area of the Face Verification Programming Assignment notebook when it attempts to autosave, or when I attempt to save it.

I chatted with a Coursera Customer Support agent and they referred me here. I also attempted logging out and back into Coursera.

Is anybody here able to help me with this error?

Hello @Stephen_Ermshar!

Well, try Kernel–> Restart and see if it works. If not, try getting a fresh copy of your notebook and let us know if it solve your problem.

Best,
Saif.

I just checked and I can both save and submit the Face Recognition assignment, even after getting a fresh copy. Meaning that it’s not some bug that is the result of a new version of the notebook.

But several students are reporting this bug almost simultaneously, so maybe there is something going wrong on one of the AWS clusters running Coursera.

I am also experiencing this issue on Course 4, week 2, assignment 2 (Transfer Learning). I’ve tried the force refresh, restarted the machine, and I’m still not able to save a copy of my work or submit it to the grader.

It looks like this is some sort of generic problem affecting a fair number of people all the sudden. It must be something wrong on the server side. Here’s another thread with 3 people seeing this.

I’ve asked the course staff for help. The mentors can’t see the backend infrastructure, but hopefully the course staff can either see what is going on or know someone to call at Coursera.

Running into the same error on Course 1, Week 1, Assignment 1. Following the thread.

One unfortunate consequence of this is that I lost my work a couple of times and had to save it into a text file as I progressed through the assignment (after I lost my work a second time :disappointed:); I pasted it back in and tried again a couple of times after disabling all ad-blocking / privacy extensions (and it still didn’t work).

Hello @Sahil_Talwar! We are extremely sorry about losing your work several times.

As you can see that many students facing this issue, so we request you wait for a while. We informed the course staff to look into the issue as soon as possible.

Best,
Saif.
PS: don’t lose that “text file”.

I had the same problem with Art_Generation_with_Neural_Style_Transfer Assignment. I passed all the tests but got 0 grade and ran into permission error. Could you help figure out what type of error is this? I also could not download or save and checkpoint as usual. Thank you so much!

Sorry about this trouble. The course staff has reported to Coursera and are waiting to hear back.

In general, the better idea is to save the notebook in its original form as an “ipynb” file. You have that option under “File → Download as notebook (ipynb)”. Then you can just upload it again instead of having to copy and paste. There is more information about how to save all files associated with the assignments on the DLS FAQ Thread.

Hi saifkhanengr, I understand Coursera staff has been informed and people are looking into it.

But I just wanted to ask you let them know the issue spans beyond DLS course. I’m hitting this in the TF-AT Course 2 assignments, but the TF-AT forums have no one else mentioning it (likely because it has a lot less student activity).

Thanks,
Carlos

Yes, I pointed out your case to the course staff when I first reported it, so they are aware that the problem is wider than just DLS. My guess is it probably affects all DLAI courses and maybe all of Coursera.

Update: sorry, it wasn’t your case, but it was this one in a TF course. that I reported to them.

Same problem for me now with deep learning course 2 week 3 lab section, imagine a tired man redo the lab section for 5 times until 3 am and still can’t submit.
Something interesting I found:
I can’t save, submit, or even delete and rename the file, which means something wrong with the permission.
I can still submit and save for the former lab section I passed.

Hi @KE_WANG1! We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience. I understand how frustrating this is. But we already informed the course staff to look into the issue as soon as possible.

Your patience will be highly appreciated. Once they resolve the issue, we will inform you.

Best,
Saif

I am also facing the same issue of “Permission Denied” for DL Course 4 Week 2 Assignment 2 Transfer Learning with Mobile Net.

My code got “reset” several times, but I typed all of it again and finally completed. It ran without issues, but when I submitted, it gave a grade of 0/100 with an arbitrary error of NoneType object has not attribute ‘add’ on cell #6.

And that was the frustrating part, I tried all of the things (including searching for that error on this forum, and looking at documentation for alternate methods to do the same, and rerunning the entire code just in case) and resubmitted code again and again, since all the tests were passing when running the notebook but the submission failing with 0/100.

Finally saw the “permission denied” error tag which is not that obvious on the header section and searched for that error which lead me here. I hope that along with taking care of whatever is causing this, your team is able to update the error code on submission and also make a pop-up of the permission denied error to make it obvious that something is wrong and to wait and not waste time, energy and get too stressed out and frustrated trying to solve the assignment.

I am getting this error to and I cannot download the work I completed on the assignment either. Coursera staff… when will the AWS or the issue with the permissions be resolved?

I am getting the issue when trying to submit the operations_on_word_vectors_v2a from the deep learning sequence models class.

I am also getting this error on the style transfer assignment. Also not able to save or download as ipynb while it is presenting this error

Good idea! Unfortunately downloading isn’t possible right now as per some other messages in this thread, but thanks anyway - I hadn’t thought to do that. Next time (although hopefully this won’t happen again haha)
