Hello Everyone! Electrical Engineer Entering AI/ML – Seeking Guidance

Hi everyone,

I’m Abdul Moiz Qureshi, an Electrical Engineer transitioning into AI/ML. I recently completed the Machine Learning Specialization course and also earned an Associate Data Scientist certification from DataCamp in 2024. I’m excited to dive deeper into the field!

I’m reaching out to ask for your advice on projects I can work on, considering my current system specs:

  • CPU: i5-9400F CPU @ 2.90GHz
  • GPU: GTX 1660 with 6GB VRAM
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 1TB HDD and 256GB SSD

Given these specs, what types of AI/ML projects would you recommend that are feasible to run on my system? Any tips on optimizing performance for deep learning tasks would also be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to your insights and suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I would recommend to find something you enjoy. It’s so much easier to work on something you are curious about versus something someone else think is cool. Also, I would recommend focusing on learning what makes them work. The math behind it all specifically. There is no model, new framework coming along everyday but I think the constant is conceptual understanding of these models. Back-propagation, probability distributions…etc.

You are unlikely to be able to create any useful deep learning models on a single computer with 8 gig of memory.

You may be able to run some small demonstration projects, there are many available on sites like Kaggle.

Generally you’ll need a paid account to cloud resource that offers a large GPU farm.
