Hi, I’m just starting this course and have watched maybe half the videos for week one. I’m wondering if some of the points are outdated with the Introduction of ChatGPT, and I used the example of the market report to see what it could do, the result was pretty impressive. Not quite a 50 page report but it contains all the main information. I was wondering therefore, is ChatGPT Considered a ANI or AGI?
A chat bot is simply a language model. It isn’t generally considered an artificial intelligence.
Thanks @TMosh. Having watched weeks two and three now, and a bit more reading about LLM, I understand how it all fits together!
ChatGPT is considered an example of Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) rather than Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). ANI refers to AI systems that excel in a specific task or a narrow set of tasks but lack the broad capabilities and general understanding that characterize AGI. ChatGPT, while proficient at generating human-like text based on the input it receives, doesn’t possess true general intelligence, consciousness, or the ability to understand context and concepts beyond the text it has been trained on. It operates within the scope of its training data and doesn’t exhibit the versatility and adaptability of AGI.
Thanks @Shahbaz_Gul. That’s a great explanation!
Chat GPT is a ANI according to my knowledge. Moreover I asked Chat GPT to answer this question, and its answer is “ChatGPT is an example of an Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI). It is designed for a specific task, which in this case is generating human-like text based on the input it receives. While it can produce impressive text and hold coherent conversations, it lacks the full spectrum of cognitive abilities and understanding that would characterize Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI would have the capacity to understand, learn, and perform a wide variety of tasks at a human-like level of proficiency. As of my last update in September 2021, AGI has not yet been achieved, and ChatGPT remains within the domain of ANI.”
Hi @Raif_Azeem
Welcome to the community.
That was a great explanation. Thank you for your contribution.
I just started to take this course and I had the same question. Thanks Richard for asking it!
First you need to understand what’s the key difference between ANI and AGI?
ANI can do one specific thing while AGI can do anything like human
Chatgpt is one of generative text based tool it can only generate text according to your prompt so chatgpt can do one thing it’s mean It is a ANI not a AGI.
I think the reply has been generated using Chat GPT
@Muhammad_Wiki ChatGPT occasionally produces unintelligent responses, making it unreliable to depend on.
Whilst mainstream ChatGPT is considered ANI, what about the ChatGPT 4 provided by Bing which can create images as well as text?
Whilst it is still generally considered ANI, is it on the journey towards AGI even if its in its infancy?
Hi @Michael_Pala, Welcome to the Community.
ChatGPT 4, provided by Bing now with image generation capabilities, or the GPT4V, that gives GPT the ability to analyse image inputs provided by the user, indeed signifies a step forward in broadening its skills. Although ChatGPT and similar models represent significant advancements in AI, they are not necessarily on the direct path to becoming AGI.
It’s important to recognise that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to AI systems that possess the ability to understand, learn, and perform a wide variety of tasks at a human-like level of proficiency. AGI would exhibit not only versatility but also the capacity to reason, understand context, and adapt to new and unforeseen situations, which current AI models like ChatGPT struggle with.
The journey from Narrow AI (ANI) to AGI is a continuous and evolving process. Innovations like ChatGPT 4 represent progress along this path. However AGI remains a significant challenge.
In essence, ChatGPT and its various iterations are remarkable examples of AI technology, falling within the realm of ANI. Progress is certainly being made, but we’ve not yet reached the stage of AGI, which would involve a more comprehensive and adaptable form of artificial intelligence.
I hope this answers your query.
yes
great
In my opinion, i think that the ChatGPT is an artificial narrow intelligence, this is because it basically deals with things that object can do such as smart speakers and so on. But for it been artificial general intelligence, it cannot play the role of what humans do in today’s generation.

In other words, AI can’t play two roles at the same time but can play only one significant roles and does what it does.
I think ChatGPT would be both of ANI and AGI. It might be the AGI for people who use it as general purposes. But it might be the ANI for people able to use it in specialized field.
No, we cannot consider ChatGPT to be a true example of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). While ChatGPT and similar models like GPT-3 are incredibly powerful and versatile in generating human-like text, they are still considered narrow AI or ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence)
