Not able to create cloud9 environment - C3W3 Lab2

I am on Course 3 of Data engineering. I started my Week3 Lab2. I log on to aws console, click through to cloud9 create environment. I follow the steps in the create environment section, and I hit a no permissions to create environment error. Following is the error,

You don’t have the permission required to perform this operation. Ask your administrator to give you permissions.

User: arn:aws:sts::144939083744:assumed-role/voclabs/user3538542=Mukunda_Ramanna is not authorized to perform: cloud9:CreateEnvironmentEC2 on resource: * because no identity-based policy allows the cloud9:CreateEnvironmentEC2 action

By the looks of it there seems to be permissons issue to create environment. I have worked through 2 courses and 2 weeks of 3rd course and never encountered this issue. I am going to check again tomorrow perhaps. Any help is much appreciated.

Hello @mukundaram,
Could you make sure you make choose the correct instance from the dropdown (t3.medium). thanks

i’m having the same issue. but i failed twice with a score of 34% and now i can not access the instance or start a new one. even after being in another environment.

Hello @MildrienIHorton,
Which lab did you attempt, since C3W3 lab 2 is a practice lab there is always 100 grades if you submit. I am not sure how did you get that issue in CloudShell since I get that error in the cloud9 environment. Could you provide more details of your lab that is the error:

Hello @MildrienIHorton,
It is normal to have that error and it shouldn’t prevent you from completing the Apache Flink lab. You shouldn’t be able to score 34% because C3W3 lab2 will always score 100, like all practice labs. This lab doesn’t use CloudShell and instructions don’t ask you to use it. This error shouldn’t affect you and choose t3.medium instead of t3.small:

I am not that advanced yet. Week 2 Assignment:
Building a Data Lakehouse with AWS Lake Formation and Apache Iceberg de-c3w2a1. suppose i need to watch some youtube because it was not well explained on coursera.org

Hello @MildrienIHorton,
This topic is related to a different practice lab, I think you should create a new topic in the course sub-forum. Go to Source Systems, Data Ingestion and Pipelines and choose +New topic in the upper left corner:

There are instructions there things you should include, such as:

  • The Lab you have the issue e.g. C3W2A1 Graded Programming Assignment 2: Building a Data Lakehouse with AWS Lake Formation and Apache Iceberg
  • A description of the issue and a screenshot of the output/error if possible
  • Description (include relevant info but please do not post solution code or your entire notebook)

There are a lot of links in the reading section of the course to help you complete the labs. Compare to the youtube/ChatGPT or other sources might not be as helpful since the information there are not course specific. Hope it helps

Hello @MildrienIHorton,
I couldn’t reproduce your issue. 34/100 means your jobs have failed in part 4 of the lab. I completed the lab without using CloudShell. Since your landing jobs pass the grade I suggest go to the files in terraform/assets/transform_etl_jobs to find the issue. To debug, it will help if you post a screenshot which job has a SUCCEEDED status from the console or AWS glue:

I appreciate your diligence in troubleshooting. I have completed the course and moved on. It’s nice to meet you, though, and thank you for your assistance.
