I was in the middle of taking the Quiz, when I got to problem #6 the multiple choice options did not show up (only an animation of circle showing up). I refreshed my browser and the multiple choice options still not showing up. I closed the browser and started from the menu again. Now I am getting an error page. I cannot get the quiz to show up at all now.
I have filed a report about this problem. Is there anything I can do on my end to get the quiz back up again? I want to finish this course this week.
Thanks.
Oz
It sounds like there may be a transient problem on the website in the last couple of hours. Another student reported this symptom, but said it cleared up when they tried again. Please wait 30 minutes and try again. Or logout of Coursera and back in again and retry.
I logout and cleared my cookies and caches for the last hour. Still did not resolve the issue. I reached Coursera customer rep. and as I was explaining the problem, the quiz suddenly became available again. I guess all you can do is to wait when a glitch like this occurs in the quiz.
Glad to hear that it’s working again. Right, there doesn’t seem to be a better solution than just to take a break and come back and check later.
I also would like to add that the only way I have found so far to get in touch with a customer service rep (human) is by engaging the bot first in the chat. The bot tried to help and it eventually offered to connect me to a customer rep when none of the solutions it offered seemed to work.
Yes, the ecosystem here is pretty complicated. There is Coursera, which is the “platform”: they just provide the underlying software and mechanisms to serve up these courses. The actual courses are created by other companies like DeepLearning.AI or various universities. So Coursera knows nothing about the content of the courses (at least in principle) and the course providers (DLAI) don’t know that much about how the servers work.
So the first important decision you need to make as the customer is what the nature of the problem is. If it is a question about the content of the courses, then talking to Coursera is a waste of time.
In this case, it appears to have been a server problem of some sort, so it probably was the right thing to contact Coursera.
But then the next level here is the economics of this. They give away a lot of material for free (with Financial Aid) and even for paying customers, you are typically paying the equivalent of about $50 US or 45E for access to the full suite of courses. Then that money gets split between Coursera and the course owner. I have zero visibility into how those funds are divided, but assume it’s 50% to each. So that’s 23 Euros a month for each of them to support you. Now think about what it costs to go to a real university with physical classrooms, real professors and support staff like TAs. Of course it depends on where you live and how strong a school you are looking at, but it costs a lot more the 45 euros a month to get in person support. An actual TA or professor with office hours costs thousands of dollars per semester at least in the US.
Note that the mentors do most of the question answering for DLAI and we are volunteers. That’s right: we get paid exactly zero dollars to do this. They can’t afford to actually pay anyone to answer your questions and still have the business model work. Think about that the next time you feel like you’re not getting very good service when you have a problem.
Paul, I thank you for volunteering as a mentor in this learning platform. I totally agree with you that Coursera and DeepLearning.AI offer a tremendous value for what they charge on a monthly basis. I sure learned a lot.
I have been a learner here since late November, and so far this was the only technical glitch I experienced in the 8 courses I have taken so far. The rate of glitch based on my experience is super low. I just wish there were clear instructions on how to resolve or get help when technical glitches occur.
That’s great to hear that you have found so much value here and that you’ve had only this one technical problem so far. It is pretty astonishing how much is available on Coursera in general. I’ve only looked at a few things outside of the Machine Learning space and have always found interesting courses there as well.
Yes, it would be nice if they had clearer instructions for how to investigate and resolve problems. The problem is that it’s pretty complicated because the ecosystem has so many layers, as I described above. You’re usually better off starting with the course specific discussion forums, unless it’s sufficiently obvious that it’s a platform level problem.
