This is a known temporary problem with Coursera’s lab platform.
It’s being worked on.
Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

I also get these problems, it’s not able to autosave so I just lost lab work for W1A4.

The same issue, I cannot submit or save

It’s a known issue. Coursera is working on it.
Additional reports are not necessary.

Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay.

Kindly try this:

  1. From the blank notebook, click File -> Open.
  2. Tick the running notebook.
  3. Click Shutdown then Duplicate.
  4. Rename the old notebook (any filename).
  5. Rename the duplicate with the original filename (basically, just remove the -Copy1 string).
  6. Open this newly renamed notebook.
  7. You should be able to save this and also see the submit button after a minute.

You “might see an error about checkpoints failing. I think that’s okay because that’s related to the permissions of the hidden .ipynb_checkpoints folder. That is not needed for grading as far as I know. The changes should persist in the actual notebook itself even if they see that error. I submitted the notebook and got the expected grade.”

Best,

Hi Saif!

I tried to follow your instructions, but when clicking “duplicate” on the notebook I get the following error:

An error occurred while duplicating
"W1A3/Improvise_a_Jazz_Solo_with_an_LSTM_Network_v4.ipynb".
Permission denied: W1A3/Improvise_a_Jazz_Solo_with_an_LSTM_Network_v4-Copy1.ipynb

I also tried to restart the exercise by click “work in browser” again in the programming assignment. But when trying to “Save and checkpoint” or autosave it still gets permission denied error. I can run the assignment, but when coming to step 3.2 it tries to save an audiofile, which gets permission denied as well.

Your programming assignment has now been broken and unusable for 3 days, could you please help and make sure to unlock us on this?

Kind regards,
Christian

Hi All,

I encountered the same issue for the first assignment of W1. No matter what I do, I can’t duplicate or rename the assignment notebook. This is holding my progress on the course. I, and a lot of others, need this to be resolved ASAP.

Thanks,
Ardem

Hi @Ardem

Many learners told us that this workaround can help them get a new copy of assignment that has the permission to save work and submit work as usual. This is something you could try to keep moving on.

Thanks so much Raymond! (@rmwkwok). Your suggested workaround solved my issue.

I was having this same problem with the inability to save or submit. From the notebook, I went to ‘Help’ and then ‘Get Latest Version.’ This seems to have fixed the problem. I had not really started the assignment, so nothing was lost for me.

This worked for me as well. Please notice though, there are two “help” buttons in the notebook, and I believe the correct one should be the one at the top right corner.

Update:
Coursera says they have fixed the issue. Please follow the instructions in the thread banner message.
