Cannot save or submit Coursera labs

Hi,

I cannot seem to save my progress on any of my coursera labs and I cannot submit my labs either. Whenever I try to, I get a permission denied error. I am not sure what to do, I have tried everything from restarting the kernel to signing out and back in on coursera and reopening the lab, but I have had no luck. I have attached an image of the error. Could I please get some help with this issue

Hi @Ishan_Dane ,

The staff team has raised this issue with our partner, the platform owner, Coursera. As this is an infrastructure problem, could you please report to Coursera via Coursera help.
We will post an announcement as soon as we hear back from Coursera.

Hi, Same error here. Cannot submit- very frustrating. Rebooting or restarting fail to help the issue.

After I get the “Permission denied: release/W1A1/Initialization.ipynb” message, when re-running I sometimes find that the very first cell fails with the message “ModuleNotFoundError: No module named ‘public_tests’”. So is this lab trying to load something from the W1A1 folder, to which it no longer has permission?

Hi @Ishan_Dane and @Jeff_Baker!
We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience. Several learners facing this issue, so we request you wait for a while. We informed the course staff to look into the issue as soon as possible.

Once they resolve the issue, we will inform you.

Best,
Saif.

Same issue here, thank you for looking into it!

Thanks for your patience, @anna123.

Best,

I face the same issues: “Permission denied” in Course 5 (Sequence models), week 2. Looking forward for this to be solved. Thanks!

Hi Saif, any insight into when this might be fixed? Tried again just now (8:50AM PDT) but same error message. Thanks for updates.

Hi everyone! Sorry for the delay.

Kindly try this:

  1. From the blank notebook, click File -> Open.
  2. Tick the running notebook.
  3. Click Shutdown then Duplicate.
  4. Rename the old notebook (any filename).
  5. Rename the duplicate with the original filename (basically, just remove the -Copy1 string).
  6. Open this newly renamed notebook.
  7. You should be able to save this and also see the submit button after a minute.

You “might see an error about checkpoints failing. I think that’s okay because that’s related to the permissions of the hidden .ipynb_checkpoints folder. That is not needed for grading as far as I know. The changes should persist in the actual notebook itself even if they see that error. I submitted the notebook and got the expected grade.”

Best,
Saif.

Hi Saif,

I am unable to duplicate the notebook.
I am getting the following error: “Permission denied: release/W3A1/Tensorflow_introduction-Copy1.ipynb”.

Salut Saif!
The same issue here. I’m unable to neither submit my assignment (Course 2, Week 1, Initialization) nor duplicate nor copy the notebook file. Will it help if I also report the problem directly to Coursera? Or I can just wait for the solving…

We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience. We informed the course staff about Duplicate failed.

Best,
Saif.

Hi Saif,
I face the same issues as well: “Permission denied: release/W2A1/Optimization_methods-Copy1.ipynb”. Thank you for the support!

Hi @Ophir_Turetz,

We are waiting for a fix for that, but if you don’t mind to try out a workaround, please follow the steps in this post and let us know here or there whether it works for you or not.

Hi Saif, it looks like from the thread below this worked for some people and not others. But I’m afraid I’m unable to follow your instructions. What does step 2, “tick the running notebook” mean? And where are the options to Shutdown and Duplicate in step 3?

Hi @Jeff_Baker,

If you have time, would you mind try these steps out and let me know how it goes?

I have opened the notebooks anew from the course page several times now, and copy pasted from my saved work, in failed attempts to submit. Is there a way to get the submit button on my saved copy?

Thanks,

Jeff
