New Learner - Machine Learning Specialization!

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to introduce myself as a new learner to the AI community! I’m currently enrolled in the Machine Learning Specialization with Coursera and can’t wait to learn more. I will hopefully progress to the Deep Learning certification next.

My hope is to really strengthen ML/DL skills so that I can add professional skills to a PhD in Philosophy (topic in AI Ethics). It’s my dream to not only be able to theorize about ethical frameworks, but also implement it directly into the code and be able to spot discrepancies that need improvement.

Can’t wait to learn with you all!

Hi, Benjamin.

Welcome! You’ve definitely come to the right place and your plan of taking MLS followed by DLS is an excellent learning path. One thing to note is that those are real programming courses that will teach you how the various types of ML algorithms work, how to use them and how to actually build them in code. Note that those courses assume you are already a reasonably proficient python programmer as a prerequisite. It’s also a prerequisite that you have solid knowledge of at least basic Linear Algebra. You don’t need anything as sophisticated as knowing what eigenvalues are, but you need to be very comfortable with vectors, matrices and algebraic operations on them (dot products, matrix multiply, transpose).

The forums are always here for any questions or discussions about the material.

Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul!

Thanks for your input! I did begin by familiarizing myself with Python and will continue to work on those skills as I go. I will definitely be familiarizing myself with those algebraic concepts as well. I’m committed to getting these certifications done, so I will be working hard to refine these skills as I work through the material.

I appreciate your guidance!

Benjamin
